Symposium at George Washington University, October 14
Katharine Moon writes that the Sigur Center for Asian Studies of George Washington University will be hosting a symposium on "Korean Dilemmas: The Political and Human Drama of Division and Reconciliation." The symposium will take place in the Lindner Family Commons Room, Room 602, 1957 E Street, NW, Washington DC. The first panel on "Reading/Interpreting North Korea" is at 2:30pm and the second panel on "The Human Drama of Division and Reconciliation" is at 4pm. ASCK members who are participating include Charles Armstrong, Jae-Jung Suh, Kathy Moon, and Gi-Wook Shin. More information is available at

Sen. George Mitchell speaking on Oct 15 at Columbia University
Charles Armstrong writes that he will be joining in a discussion with former Senator George Mitchell on "Conflict Resolution: Lessons and Applications for the Korean Peninsula" on October 15, from 4:30pm to 6pm. The talk will take place in the International Affairs Building 1501.

Sen. Carl Levin on negotiations with North Korea
Karin Lee writes that Sen. Carl Levin (D-Michigan) has recently (October 3) released a statement on the urgent need for US-DPRK negotiations. Levin states: "Despite urging from our allies in South Korea and Japan, and the Chinese government, the President has not indicated that he is ready to place a serious negotiating package before the North Koreans."
